Spalding County voluntary organizations active in disaster Spalding County voluntary organizations active in disaster (sc voad) assists in the early response and relief efforts of disaster. The Spalding County voad is a network of non-profit agencies, faith-based organizations, civic organizations, businesses, schools, and local government entities, anchored by the Spalding Collaborative. The sc voad resource allocation comittee membership includes representatives for griffin/spalding chamber of commerce, griffin housing authority, habitat for humanity, promise place, united way, griffin naacp, and several local congregations. The sc voad facilitates the long-term recovery phase of the disaster. The north Georgia conference of the united methodist church and the southeastern synod of the evangelical lutheran church in america partners to train and support case managers, construction manager, and a volunteer coordinator to work with homeowners, assess construction costs, and develop a plan for repairing or rebuilding. These plans are brought to the voad for funding and implementation. Volunteer teams assist with removing debris, carpentry,sheetrock, flooring, painting, and similiar tasks. Enlisting the help of volunteers helps reduce the costs so more homeowners can be helped.

Backpack food program in an effort to make sure students have enough food during weekends throughout the school year, Spalding Collaborative partners are offering to send nutritious, child-friendly food home on fridays in the backpack of students at highest risk of hunger. The free program is being offered to students in kindergarten through fifth grade at selected elementary schools. Breakfast,lunch, and a snack are provided for each two-day weekend during the school year. The program is aimed to help Families who are working hard to provide basic needs during difficult economic times. Elibible students are identified by school counselors and staff who invite the parent/guardian to enroll in the program for the student.
