Program areas at Spanish Mustang Preserve
Completed relocation effort to move the original Spanish Mustang registry foundation stock from the 3,000 acre homestead ranch (cayuse ranch) in Wyoming. This ranch was where the founder of the Spanish Mustang registry, bob brislawn gathered the original Spanish mustangs, starting in the early 1900s and founded the Spanish Mustang registry (smr), the oldest horse registry in north america. It was the home of the granddaughter and grandson of the founder, bob brislawn and his remaining Spanish mustangs. Due to financial challenges, these two remaining decedents of bob brislawn, had to sell the ranch to pay off debt. The Spanish Mustang Preserve stepped in and provided money for fuel, lodging and purchased horse trailers for the 18 month project to relocate the remaining Spanish mustangs horses (numbering over 125 horses) to bayfield, Wisconsin. This was begun in 2018 and completed in 2019. The two grandchildren were also relocated to bayfield at the expense of the Spanish Mustang Preserve. The breed is on the 'endangered breeds' list with well under 1000 horses alive. The largest collection of remaining Spanish mustangs are now located in bayfield wi, supported by the Spanish Mustang Preserve.
