Description
Spirit Nys supports students to persist in school by preventing dropouts, particularly in Rochester, NY where the dropout rate for our targeted students is 60% without intervention. To date, we have supported 50 students and achieved a retention rate. We provide cash stipends of $150 per month to enrolled students, delivered as two installments of $75 each. Students commit to improving attendance and grades, and being good school citizens by actively engaging with teachers.

Spirit NYS's support enables students to continue in school rather than drop out; in Rochester NY, our initial focus, the dropout rate, without intervention, is 60% for students matching our criteria. To date, 106 students have been supported, with a retention rate of 92.5%.( 8 students have dropped out;) GPAs on average doubled in the first year and increased by 15% more in the second year; 4 students who were failing are now A students; 2 students expected to drop out returned to school; all are passing courses needed to graduate. Several have won prestigious awards, such as Susan B Anthony or NYS Attorney Generals triple C awards.
