Spartan annual meetingspartan holds an annual meeting to highlight advances in Spondyloarthritis Research and Treatment and encourage post-doctoral fellows to engage in the spartan mission of fostering Research and education in the field of Spondyloarthritis (spa). The Research and education meeting is also an opportunity to bring together expert, dedicated researchers to identify and address unmet needs in the field of spa Research and therapy. The hybrid meeting is attended by spartan members from throughout north america - with attendance of 130 in cleveland, Ohio and 50 virtually. Presenters in the scientific sessions are the prominent international experts in their fields. The Spondyloarthritis review course is a pre-meeting workshop for rheumatology fellows and other trainees. We conducted an mri workshop attended by more than 75 learners.
Spartan grantsthe mission of spartan is to advance Research and education to improve the care of patients with Spondyloarthritis. We feel strongly that laying the foundation for the next generation of researchers and leaders in spa is an important portal to achieve this mission. The goal of our grant programs is to support the early stages of a fellow-led Research project. With the aim of encouraging fellows to take up Research projects under mentors with expertise in spa, spartan supports to 2 mentored fellowship projects each year ($10,000 per project - with $5000 each for the mentor and mentee). Spartan's seed fund grant supports early career investigators who are working in the field of axial Spondyloarthritis and has been renamed the early career investigator (eci) award with up to 2 new grants supported ($25,000 per project per year for two years) annually. Travel awards go to the top 3 abstracts to support travel to industry meetings (3 awards @ $1000 each).
Spartan Research projectsclassic (classification of axial Spondyloarthritis inception cohort)the primary study objective is to test ("validate") the performance of the current asas classification criteria in a prospective cohort of patients presenting with undiagnosed chronic back pain to rheumatologists at north american sites in us, mexico, and canada greater than or equal to 3 months duration with onset less than or equal to 45 years of age. The study is expected to be completed in 2023 with 500 patients at 25 sites.basis (biomarkers in axial Spondyloarthritis investigative study) the primary objective is to establish a well-characterized biobank for axspa and identify a diagnostic biomarker(s) utilizing a cross-sectional study of individuals within the spectrum of axspa. The basis steering committee has developed the study budget and documents and is seeking industry support.
