Description
Squannacook Greenways aims to construct, maintain, and promote the Squannacook River Rail Trail (SRRT) as a safe source of non-motorized transportation and recreation. The 2.4-mile-long SRRT is currently under construction and will convert about 3.7 miles of a former rail bed. The second phase of the rail trail, covering 1.8 miles, was completed in 2022 and has quickly become a cherished part of the area. The third phase, spanning 0.3 miles from Crosswind Road to B, is still under construction. Squannacook Greenways is located in Townsend, MA.

Program areas at Squannacook Greenways

Construction of the third of four phases of the Squannacook River Rail Trail was completed in spring 2023, with a total of 2.4 miles open. The rail trail has already become a beloved part of the area. The final phase 4 of the rail trail, a 0.9 mile section from Crosswind Road to South Road in Townsend, was begun in Nov. 2023, and is scheduled to be complete in April 2024. Our grand opening of the completed rail trail is scheduled for June 1, 2024. The contractor, Shepco, also donated $30,000 in additional landscaping services not required by our contract with them.
