Program areas at St Croix Environmental Association
Conservation:conservation of wetland, salt pond and beach habitats at the southgate coastal reserve(scr),to protect nesting habitat for endangered species and for public education and enjoyment. Scr is recognized by birdlife international as an important bird area (iba). Conduct special programs and presentations to raise awareness of the need for conservation of wetland and other habitats for resident, endemic and migratory birds. Installed two rain catchment barrels for watering and additional signage on the reserve. Planted additional native trees. Conservation of important bat habitat at estate barren spot. Research and increase the populations of the endangered St. Croix agave and the tropical lilyhorn native tree restoration. Continued habitat restoration for endangered St. Croix lizards and conducted bird surveys and training on St. thomas and St. Croix.
Advocacy: programs focused on community organizing by training and coordinating a coalition of dedicated community members to take action on Environmental justice issues on St. Croix. Started work with walking softer an organization whose mission is to "inform, inspire and support change makers...in the conservation and regeneration of our planet".
Education: delivered programs to provide hands-on learning and enjoyment of St. Croix's wildlife and natural areas through snorkel clinics, coral conservation corp, hikes, kayak trips, bird watching and other special activities. Host earth day ecofair, featuring presentations and interactive lessons from public and private sector Environmental agencies. Coordinate special programs such as clean roadside and beach clean-up, conservation awareness and teacher training. Conduct summer programs to deliver experiential nature activities for elementary through high school age children. Continued the Environmental leadership program as a pathway to sea reconnecting with local schools post pandemic. Installed a sign near the cruise ship dock to enlighten the public about the endangered species on St. Croix.
