OTHER: HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital delivers a comprehensive array of healthcare services to both inpatients and outpatients. It is our mission to serve the sick, especially the poor, with quality healthcare services and healthcare education. Our accredited programs have consistently demonstrated quality outcomes that positively impact our patients, their families and the entire community. We provide quality medical healthcare regardless of race, creed, sex, national origin, handicap, age, or ability to pay. HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital fulfills our health care Mission through advanced technologies, professional, skilled and compassionate caregivers, and the highest level of quality service. The healing environment combines the newest technology and efficiencies to provide region leading, high-quality care. We offer state-of-the-art technologies that provide advanced services in surgery, medical imaging, laboratory, physical therapy and the emergency department, just to name a few. With efficiently designed clinical areas, which allow nurses to spend more time with their patients at the bedside, and the deluxe amenities offered in our Women and Infants Center, our staff continues to deliver the difference in quality, safe care. Our main service lines continue to grow to provide high-quality procedures close to home. The hospital employs 198 colleagues. Inpatient admissions for Fiscal Year 2023 were 1,536. Total outpatient visits for the hospital were 74,560.
EMERGENCY SERVICES: HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital Emergency Department is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by board certified physicians and specially trained nurses, all of whom provide quality patient care for a wide range of concerns. Seeing over 9000 patients annually, we have access to a wide range of specialists either in-house or through advanced telemedicine to help diagnose and provide treatment for those requiring emergency care. With leading edge technology at our fingertips, we can process x-rays, CT scans and other diagnostic tests accurately and quickly, allowing faster diagnosis and treatment in a wide range of other areas, including: * Stroke * Heart attack * Shortness of breath * Motor vehicle and other accidents * Broken bones * Abdominal pain * Lacerations * Mental health issues * and more. We continue our commitment to quality cardiac care by partnering with world-renowned cardiovascular specialists through the Prairie Heart Institute of Illinois. Prairie is a national leader in the innovation and development of new diagnostic and treatment procedures. HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital Breese was recently re-designated as an Acute Stroke Ready Hospital by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). Additionally, emergency department staff recently trained on and began using a LUCAS state-of-the-art chest compression system which assists in offering high-quality emergency chest compression support when needed. The device can do chest compressions for extended multi-hour resuscitations without needing to switch out caregivers, reducing caregiver fatigue. It can also provide consistent CPR when transferring patients from a stretcher to a bed, for example, reducing interruptions in CPR delivery. It also frees up hands so that they can provide other care to the patient.
SURGICAL SERVICES: Inpatient and outpatient surgery options are offered at HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital Breese, depending on what the physician determines is best for the patient's unique needs and symptoms. Our state-of-the-art Outpatient Surgery Center that opened in 2018 has 22 private rooms, 3 operating rooms and 2 procedure rooms. In FY2023, St. Joseph's surgical team performed 2,594 surgical procedures. Community members can stay close to home for a wide-range of procedures including: * ENT * GI * General Surgery * Gynecology * OB * Ophthalmology * Orthopedics * Hand * Urology * Podiatry In 2023, St. Joseph's Hospital added ENT procedure and expanded offerings for ophthalmology. Additionally, a da Vinci Xi robotic-assisted surgical system was acquired to bring robotic surgery to Breese in the summer of 2023. Patients benefit from surgery conducted using the da Vinci Xi surgical system in the following ways: * Surgery is minimally invasive, with reduced scarring. * Shorter hospital stays. * Quicker recovery. * Less pain medication is often needed. In fall of 2023, St. Joseph's Hospital in affiliation with HSHS Medical Group began expanding orthopedic and podiatry services. An orthopedic nurse practitioner was added to medical staff and renovations began on new clinic space for these service lines. The new clinic is expected to be open in spring of 2024.
OB (MOMS & BABIES): HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital's Women and Infants Center offers labor and delivery services along with lactation consulting, prepared childbirth education, home health visits and more. Families from multiple surrounding counties choose to deliver at St. Joseph's as they average 500 births each year. Located within the Women and Infants Center is our level II nursery where we are able to offer an advanced level of care due to our designation as a Level II Perinatal Care Facility in affiliation with the Southern Illinois Perinatal Network and the Illinois Department of Public Health. Serving as a Level II Perinatal Care facility indicates that the hospital is prepared with the expertise and resources to meet the medical needs for infants as young as 32 weeks or 3.3 pounds. In addition, full-term newborns with breathing difficulties, jaundice or other medical conditions that require an intermediate level of care can also be safely treated because this higher level of care is available. The Women and Infant Center has a variety of safe pain control options for mothers-to-be, as well as highly trained, compassionate nurses to help laboring mothers with relaxation techniques and pain relief. The Women and Infants Center at HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital Breese has earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval for Perinatal Care Certification by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The certification recognizes HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital's efforts to achieve integrated, coordinated, patient-centered care for clinically uncomplicated pregnancies and births.
