Program areas at Students of the World

Students of the World was able to provide a variety of experiential and content-driven opportunities for our community this year including the participant media programs, pedal south sponsorship and film production opportunities.silk film challenge program: for this program we worked with participant media to create a nation-wide film challenge where our sow community could enter into a timed 10-day challenge to create a short film about their "bloom moment," when he or she feels as though they are living their highest potential, best life. A way for our community to submit their meaningful video content for a chance at a grant prize or to be aired on pivot television. Emerging voices: the emerging voices program was a grant program that we ran for the Students of the World community, opening up an opportunity for one filmmaker to have the chance to create a short 3-5 minute film about immigration issues in their community. the grant winner was able to receive hands on training and feedback, a one on one mentor session with a renowned film director and a short film created about the experience that would air on pivot television. Sanlaap program: the sanlaap project was working with a nonprofit in india that was focused on helping girls transition back into their communities after being rescued from the sex trade. the women there had built a business making jewelry in order to help create revenue for themselves and get back on their feet. This opportunity was for a sow filmmaker to spend two weeks in india to shoot the footage and then upon returning to the us make a short film to promote sanlaap's efforts. Robin mcgraw grant program: this robin mcgraw grant program was an opportunity that we presented to our sow community to share the work they are doing on campus to combat sexual violence. We did a month long social media campaign to raise awareness for the issue and garner support for sexual violence. We presented a grant to two sow community members who were doing wonderful work on their campuses to combat sexual violence. the grant that we awarded was to support and further their existing programs so they could continue making impact. Pedal south program: this program was run by alumni of the Students of the World program, with the intention of biking from Alaska to argentina in search of stories of progress. the 4-person team would make the bike trip over 18 months, bringing their camera and editing equipment along in order to create series of short documentary-style films in line with the Students of the World mission. Sow was the fiscal sponsor for pedal south so provided creative and production guidance as well as administrative support by accepting donations on their behalf and regranting the funds to the team - for these services sow collected a 15% fee. Program expenses were related to the legal fees incurred in working with our legal team to set up the fiscal sponsorship and the contract to formalize the relationship.
