Program areas at Sustainable Agriculture Education

The Agriculture Revitalization program addresses the unique importance of sustainable farming near cities. Urban-edge agriculture places sustain cities by providing fresh food grown by diverse farmers ecosystems services water and waste recycling efficiencies and community engagement opportunities. They contain cities by creating urban-edge greenbelts and define cities by fostering dynamic agricultural traditions and sense of place. Work and services include: place-based projects food sheds and agricultural economic viability assessments implementation and business plans and tool kits and conceptual frameworks that support and promote sustainable food systems.
Urban-Rural Connection programs recognize that urban communities and rural areas at their edges must work together to create sustainable resilient and equitable communities. Work and service includes food supply chain assessments linked with city planning economic and public health goals; as well as public engagement projects that celebrate local food culture and connect urban residents to nearby farms and the people who grown their food. In the Bay Area's largest most diverse city we launched Food Works: Assessing Local Food as a driver to make San Jose a healthier more resilient place to live; and to link public health equitable economic development place-making smart growth and climate mitigation through local food.
