Program areas at Tacoma Urban League
The male involvement program (mip) a youth violence prevention program aimed at middle school males of color. It teaches alternate options for reducing conflict, managing anger, and avoiding violence through structures dialogue, culture specific exercise and group mentoring. Students enrolled in mip receive mentoring and direction from adult males of color. Girls with purpose (gwp) an all-girls program that combines positive adult female mentoring with group activities and a structured curriculum that helps to empower young females of color to succeed as productive citizens, both scholastically and in all aspects of their personal life. Its target audience is middle school aged girls between 11 to 14 years old. Family support partnership (fsw) a home visiting program providing support and training to families with children ages 2 to 12. A referral system is used to identify families and a screening process is used to determine program suitability. This is in partnership with Tacoma pierce county health department strengthening families division. Digital connectors a program that immerses talented young people in technology training and helps them build their leadership and workplace skills to enter the 21st century economy. Over the program, young people gain new knowledge that helps them in school, prepares them for employment, and instills the pride of knowing they have made a difference in their communities. Digital connectors also learn about career opportunities through site visits to technology companies, job shadowing experiences and campus tours. Navigator provides in person support to uninsured individuals and families that are seeking adequate medical coverage using the Washington state benefit exchange. In partnership with the Urban League of metropolitan seattle (ulms) housing department our housing program provides direct service programs and resources to individuals and families who seek knowledge, understanding and access to pertinent financial education that result in maintaining and obtaining home ownership. We support and work with clients, in the south sound region, during hardships that could jeopardize home ownership. We process home foreclosures, loan modifications and mediations. Clients are referred, sent by word of mouth and walk-ins. Voters advocacy is a partnership between the League and statewide poverty action network to increase the voting power of low-income communities and communities of color in pierce county/tacoma by conducting targeted voter registration, education, and participation efforts. Tacoma african american leadership forum is a program designed to strengthen collaboration and build capacity among african american leaders in tacoma/pierce county. The primary aim is to convene and empower a diverse network of civic-minded african americans to work collectively to improve the social and economic health and wellbeing of the tacoma/pierce county african american community. Hilltop Urban garden (hug) seeks to increase racial equity and food sovereignty in the hilltop area of Tacoma and supports and advocates for racial and gender justice. The Tacoma Urban League guild a volunteer group formed to enhance and support the mission of the Tacoma Urban League through volunteerism and community service. It is comprised of established community members who donate their time and support to extend the mission, programs and services of the Urban League. The Tacoma Urban League young professionals (tulyp) a national Urban League volunteer auxiliary that targets young professionals (21 to 40 years old) to empower their communities & change lives through the Urban League movement. Currently tulyp has over 30 members and four committees focusing on the following areas: education & youth empowerment, economic empowerment, health & quality of life and civic engagement & social justice
Elizabeth wesley youth merit incentive award program our objective is to recognize and appreciate youth annually with awards of merit incentive grants of $350 for academic excellence, community involvement, and good citizenship.
