Program areas at Target Hunger

Food Services: Target Hunger provides food for all who are hungry while helping them attain a level of stability that can break them out of an ongoing cycle of food insecurity and poverty. We offer assistance through multiple channels, address the root causes of hunger through a social service navigation program and provide disaster relief services. In 2022, we distributed more than 1.2 million meals to individuals in need and provided over 1,100 social service navigation referrals. We served nearly 79,000 individuals during the year. Our programs are provided to individuals and families from more than 140 zip codes, and 66% of the people served live in a 10-zip-code service area in Houston designated by the USDA as food deserts.
Target Hunger staff, volunteers, and community members maintain two community gardens, the Willie G. & Gladys R. Goffney Community Garden located in Kashmere Gardens and the Shotwell Garden located at our main warehouse. Each year thousands of pounds of fresh vegetables are harvested, nearly all of which is distributed to clients. The gardens increase access to nutritious foods and serve as a hands-on way to combat food insecurity.
