Program areas at The 74 Media
The 74 invested considerable journalistic effort in 2022 into reporting on a broad constellation of issues related to school security, from armed officers patrolling schools, to The horrific wave of school shootings, to The ways in which schools used online surveillance technology to monitor The activities of students. Much of this work focused on a surveillance company that some school districts, notably minneapolis, had enlisted to monitor students' online activities when classes went remote during The pandemic. The success of The 74's reporting about student safety and privacy prompted The news editors to launch a twice-a-month newsletter devoted to The topic, entitled "school (in) security."
2022 also saw The launch of The 74's first "16 under 16" project, in which our editors conducted a nationwide search for The most accomplished and promising students in stem fields. Working with a panel of outside judges to evaluate and winnow The field of nominees, The 74's editorial team produced profiles of each of The outstanding students and in several cases in-depth video interviews. Their stories and achievements were breathtaking.
In partnership with The aspen institute, The 74 presented an uplifting series of articles and videos that highlighted and celebrated The work of a dozen educators, mentors and local leaders, whose work with students formed a critical part of The social glue that united their communities. The project, entitled "weaving a stronger society," involved almost every reporter at The 74 and led to two first-place awards in national journalism competition.
Other program services - expanded The search and impact of The 74 through a powerful mix of editorial, video, audience development initiatives, live events and Media opportunities.
