Program areas at The American Stage Company
Theatre Programming: American Stages 22-23 Season saw steady growth, however has still not reached pre pandemic attendance or donations. The Mainstage is American Stage's core programming. We produced five Mainstage plays during our 22-23 season. These five plays were attended by over 13,000 patrons. 22-23 also continued our American Stage in the Park, a more than 30 year old community tradition. This five week event was held at Demens Landing Park in downtown St. Petersburg drew 18,000 patrons. In order to make theatre accessible to all, both our Mainstage and Park shows had significant ticket discounts for seniors, students and active duty military, with some eligible for free tickets. Our Lift Every Voice New Play Festival was held in March 2023, featuring new works by playwrights from across the nation focusing on a diversity of storytelling.
Education: Our education and outreach department serves adults and children through our Drama School with on-site classes in acting, musical theatre and improv (250 students served). Additionally, we offered 8 weeks of Summer Camp for children of all ages. Each week leads to a sharing performance for family and friends. We happily hosted 700+ students during Summer 2023. We also offered school residencies in the Pinellas County school system primarily via our Write On! program which works with students to develop original plays. This playwriting course taught by our experienced Teaching Artists culminates in those plays being read by professional actors in class which allows for further play development. With a focus on historically under-resourced schools, Write On! is a significant investment in the future of our community, in 22-23 we worked with 300 students. Our School Tour program was live and in person in 22-23 and this bilingual production toured through county schools, reaching approximately 5000 students.
