The new suite, which is one of The most important components of The hospital's expansion and renovation project, triples The size of amc's previous surgical area with more than 7,000 square feet of new and renovated space. It encompasses:- five state-of-the-art operating rooms;- a minor procedure room;- The jeffrey schoenfeld and matthew holbein surgery recovery suite, separating dogs and cats; and- a new central sterile Center.- a new anesthesia pre-operative unitchristine and bruce crawford feline health institute:to best serve amc's feline patients, it is critical that we offer a calm and quiet environment that meets their needs. Our feline institute includes a designated area where cat owners can check-in and wait for appointments without disturbances from other animals. Similarly, our new surgical institute includes a separate cat recovery area to provide a more healing environment and promotes The importance of feline health.anna-maria and Stephen kellen institute for postgraduate education is dedicated to providing superior postgraduate educational opportunities to train The veterinary leaders of The future. Amc's internship program is one of The most competitive in The united states. Since its inception in 1963, more than 2,500 veterinarians have graduated from amc's rigorous postgraduate training program. In 2023, amc:- received 177 internship applications;- filled 30 rotating internship spots;- had four specialty interns pursuing an additional year of training in their chosen specialty; and- had 40 residents in various stages of their three-year clinical training.
Research - The caspary research institute in 2023, amc veterinarians published more than 30 peer- reviewed research studies in professional journals.amc doctors conduct clinical investigations of naturally occurring diseases in pets, often in collaboration with physicians studying The same illnesses in humans, to enable more effective diagnoses, advance Medical and surgical treatments, and prevent disease in animals and humans alike. (continued on schedule o)in 2023, amc veterinarians conducted clinical trials in three areas:- hemodialysis and extracorporeal therapies, including a study on a potential new treatment for kidney diseasein cats;- interventional radiology/interventional endoscopy, including evaluation of an artificial neobladder placement for dogs with resectable lower urinary tract tumors; and- oncology, including comparison of a combination chemotherapy and immunotherapy to treat dogs with splenic hemangiosarcoma.
Community outreach and The usdan institute for Animal health educationann and charles johnson one health institute:schwarzman amc hosted its ninth annual one health conference, connecting human and veterinary medicine: environmental impact on Animal and human health, in november 2023. A total of 276 attendees, from six countries, in addition to The united states, took part in The conference. (continued on schedule o)veterinary specialists in internal medicine, clinical pharmacology, and avian practice joined physicians and public health experts for four one-hour sessions:- non-tobacco environmental risks for bladder cancer in people and dogs- coalmine canaries and dancing cats: animals as sentinels of environmental health hazards- a one health approach to leptospirosis surveillance in new york city- impact of wildfires on Animal and human populationsusdan institute for Animal health education:in 2023, The usdan institute, supported by john and eva usdan, advanced its mission to provide reliable, timely pet health information across all aspects of Animal care. Through a range of initiatives, The institute reached over 5 million people in all 50 states and 67 countries, sharing essential insights and resources with a wide audience. Key initiatives included:the institute hosted 12 monthly webinars covering topics including heart disease, diabetes, dental care, brachycephalic airway syndrome, and stress & anxiety in pets, averaging 350 attendees per webinar. In december 2023, The institute responded to an urgent health concern by hosting a webinar titled, "mystery canine respiratory illness," which drew 862 attendees watching live.the institute's weekly pet health tips consistently ranked among The most engaging posts on The Animal Medical Center's social media platforms, generating over 4 million impressions in 2023.the institute's weekly pet health newsletter continued to build a loyal readership, surpassing 10,000 subscribers with a robust average open rate of 52%. Educational videos, including popular "how-to" guides and short "explainer" videos on specific health conditions, contributed to The institute's youtube presence, where video views rose to 957,966.our pet health library views increased 94% over 2022. Youth programs: The institute hosted two sessions of vet camp online for children ages 8-10, which provided a weeklong interactive learning experience about veterinary care. Community events: The institute also strengthened its connection with The community by participating in local events, providing educational materials, and engaging pet owners directly. These events included The "paws for happy hour" at hudson river park, The muddy paws block party in hell's kitchen, and The halloween howl & healthy hound fair in carl schurz park.
