Program areas at The Appeal
In 2023, The Appeal published 160+ investigations, news reports, articles and newsletters about policing, prosecution, punishment and alternatives to The criminal legal system. We center The voices of those impacted by incarceration and policing and nearly one-third of our journalism was produced by currently or formerly incarcerated writers. Our newsletter grew to 16,000 subscribers. Our journalism won national awards for community engagement and led to nearly 200 impacts, including state and federal investigations, proposed legislation, The release of a victim from detention, and continued financial support for two alternatives programs. This work reached millions of people on our website and social channels, and millions more through co-publications with local outlets across The country.
