Program areas at Bargain Box / York County Volunteer Association Inc
The York County Volunteer Association Grants and Gifts program provides financial assistance to several service organizations in the local community. This included $36,000 to the local York County Food Closet to feed the hungry, $12,000 for the York County Meals on Wheels Program to deliver meals to senior residents living alone, $15,000 to the YMCA's Bright Beginnings Program to provide clothing, coats, shoes, backpacks, and other school supplies for lower income school children, $9,000 to York/Williamsburg/James City County Professional Firefighters and Dispatchers to provide firefighters with suicide prevention training and peer support training, $5,000 to the Alternatives Leadership Academy to build social, emotional and civic competencies for disadvantaged teens, $5,000 to Bacon Street Youth and Family Services to provide clinical and family counseling for at-risk youth for mental health and/or substance abuse, $12,500 to support Colonial CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) who advocate for abused and neglected children whose families are involved in the legal system, $13,000 CHATS (Cole's Horse Autism Therapy Station to provide services for children with autism, spectrum disorders and other related disorders, $7,000 to Eggleston to provide programs, education, and employment for disabled individuals, $3,000 was given for elementary school children to Learn to Swim at the local YMCA, and $2,500 for our local York-Poquoson Social Services to support their Emergency Welfare Fund, $10,000 to Lackey Clinic to provide medical and dental care for the uninsured and disadvantaged, $15,000 the Shop-with-a-Sheriff Program to foster a positive relationship for children with law enforcement personnel through a Christmas shopping experience with a Uniformed Law Enforcement Officer, $11,000 to Soundscapes to provide musical exposure for students in middle and high school.
The York County Volunteer Association's Scholarship Committee paid $2,000 to assist residents with tuition of college and educational organizations to enhance skills which could improve the financial condition of themselves and their families. Summer School Tuition of $1,050 was provided to allow students from low-income families to graduate from high school.
The York County Volunteer Association's Family Assistance Committee provided financial assistance to needy families and individuals to pay for housing, utility bills, medical and dental costs, insurance payments, and transportation expenses through their help line which fielded calls from residents in financial distress.
The YCVA provided $50 Christmas gift cards to 300 children of low-income families distributed by their respective schools - one gift card was given per family to help defray expenses during the holiday season which cost $15,000. One $100 honorarium was given.
