Program areas at The Bread Line
In 2022, The Bread Line served 47,795 meals from its downtown soup kitchen, The stone soup cafe. To meet this need, The Bread Line received 40,098 pounds of donated food - The bulk of which came from The fairbanks community food bank and The fairbanks memorial hospital as well as The generosity of individual donors from The fairbanks community. We also supplement our food needs by growing produce in our downtown community garden. The stone soup cafe is open for free meals on weekdays, regardless of holiday or inclement weather and in 2022, volunteers served 3,922 hours to make it all possible. The stone soup community garden grew into its own in 2022, meeting its rolling goal of growing enough food to provide nutritious, fresh vegitables to The senior center, meals on wheels, thrivealaska and several odwntown assisted living facilities as well as The Bread Line's own anti-hunger programs. The garden also successfully dedicated several beds as a "snacking garden" available to anyone in need of food, at any time.
Another program we run is a family volunteering initiative - kid's cafe. During 2022 this program was again postponed due to The pandemic. This program is scheduled to return in 2023.
The Bread Line's culinary job training program, stone's throw began The training process to become a snap-e&t provider, a program that helps snap participants gain skills and find work that moves them forward to self-sufficiency. Stone's throw staff also taught at both The detention and treatment wings of The fairbanks youth facility as well as hosting a winter holiday banquet with The youth incarcerated there and their families. Over The summer, stone's throw chefs gave culinary instruction with calypso farm's "community roots" youth job training project. They also gave regular cooking demonstrations through a local "chef at The market" program with public outreach at various area farmers market.
