Description
The Bushwick Starr presents an annual season of new performance works, defined by both its artists and community. Since 2007, it has grown into a thriving theatrical venue. The 2021-22 season returned to public performances with world premieres at various venues and nontraditional spaces in Manhattan and Brooklyn, including an audio-installation version of Whitney White's DEFINITION at the Mercury Store in Gowanus B. Program areas at The Bushwick Starr

The Bushwick Starr's 22-23 Main Stage Season included the world premieres of: THIS AND THAT by Phil Soltanoff + Steven Wendt (Sept. 7-25 2022 at the Chocolate Factory Theater in Queens, remounted Dec. 8-17 at HERE Arts Center in Soho); DARK DISABLED STORIES by Ryan J. Haddad (Feb. 28-Apr. 8 2023 at the Shiva Theater at the Public Theater); and demons. by Keelay Gipson (May 10-June 3 2023 at The Connelly Theater in the East Village). All three productions were popular and critical successes - in particular, DARK DISABLED STORIES received Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk, and Drama League nominations and awards. We also partnered once again with Center for Performance Research in Williamsburg to host our annual Starr Reading Series. This season we selected 6 scripts which underwent developmental rehearsal time and were presented in free public performances for 425 audience members in March/April 2023. Presented playwrights included: Marissa Joyce Stamps, Alba Delia Hernndez, Divya Mangwani, Daniella De Jess, Maya Lawson, Jess I. Valles. We also underwent 5 developmental workshops for upcoming Main Stage works as well as artists of interest for future seasons including Michelle J. Rodriguez, Phillip Howze, Marie Thomas, Softee, and Jon Riddleberger.The Starr's education programs included Big Green Theater for elementary students with PS018, PS075, PS106K; Creating Performance for local teens with El Puente Bushwick; and Senior Storytelling with Round Table and Ridgewood Bushwick Older Adults Center. In addition we returned to Maria Hernandez Park on August 21 2022 with our Summer Arts Festival with Oye Group featuring free arts activities and performances.
