The Bushwick Starr presents an annual season of new performance works, defined by both its artists and community. Since 2007, it has grown into a thriving theatrical venue. The 2021-22 season returned to public performances with world premieres at various venues and nontraditional spaces in Manhattan and Brooklyn, including an audio-installation version of Whitney White's DEFINITION at the Mercury Store in Gowanus B. The Bushwick Starr's 23-24 Main Stage Season included the world premieres of: Snatch McAdams & Tainty McCracken present IT'S THAT TIME OF THE MONTH by Becca Blackwell + Amanda Duarte (Oct 25-Dec 10 2023 at Soho Rep); SELF PORTRAITS (Deluxe) by Phillip Howze (Feb 6-24 2024 at JACK) and PRESENCIA by Michelle J. Rodriguez (June 11-29 2024 at The Connelly Theater). All three productions were popular and critical successes with Snatch Adams receiving an extended run.We also partnered once again with Center for Performance Research in Williamsburg to host our annual Starr Reading Series. This season we selected 8 scripts which underwent developmental rehearsal time and were presented in free public performances for 520 audience members. Presented works included: Earth is Not One of Your Lil Friends by Nia Calloway (Dec 6 2023); Have You Ever Thought About...by Michael Oluokun (Dec 12 2023); I must belong somewhere by Lily Gonzales (Dec 13 2023); WHILE WE'RE HERE by Deneen Reynolds-Knott (Feb 27 2024); GODSPUNK written and directed by Aeon Andreas (Feb 28 2024); lil nagins: a photorealist rendering of the Tutor Time near Yardley, PA circa 1999 by Utkarsh Rajawat (Feb 29 2023); MOTHER/ROAD by Avi Amon (March 5 2024); THIS BUG IS GAY by Genevieve Simon (Mar 6 2024). We also underwent 3 developmental workshops for upcoming Main Stage works as well as artists of interest for future seasons including Ian Andrew Askew, Julia May Jonas, and Shayok Misha Chowdhury.The Starr's education programs included Big Green Theater for elementary students with PS075 and PS106K; Creating Performance for local teens with El Puente Bushwick; and Senior Storytelling with Round Table and Ridgewood Bushwick Older Adults Center. We also continued our annual Summer Arts Festival with Oye Group on August 27 2023 on Eldert Street outside of the new site of the Bushwick Starr, providing free all-ages arts activities and performances for 500+ of our Bushwick neighbors.
