Program areas at The Discovery Orchestra
1. Media program production, distribution and promotion - considerable staff time was spent creating, distributing and/or promoting: 1) regular episodes (as well as one live broadcast) of our twice-monthly radio program, "inside music", in partnership with wwfm-the classical network in new jersey; 2) The release of The final episodes of our video/podcast series, notes from under The piano; 3) continuing national distribution of our "discover saint-saens organ' symphony", "discover vivaldi's four seasons and "fall in love with music" public television programs; 4) The release of seven additional quest modules for users of our new game app, "aha! Classical; 5) The release of a new educational video, "discover mozart's variations on a familiar tune" on our youtube channel; and 6) a program and game app promotion campaign with partner social impact studios. Additionally, The three public television programs mentioned were available on The pbs passport streaming platform (like The beethoven program, detailed in item 2 below). Past digital programs continued being distributed on The films media group and amazon prime video platforms, as well as internationally through american public television worldwide. Some royalties and streaming sales resulted from this distribution.
3. Community engagement - we partnered with five local student and senior organizations to provide educational music listening programs in partnership with these groups. During The fiscal year, there were seven in-person sessions presented at The partner organizations' locations, with one other session presented to a senior group partner virtually. Together, these eight sessions reached 460 people. We also provided transportation for one of The community organizations to attend our two screening events in The fall and spring.
2. "discover beethoven's 5th" re-release - this interactive, educational public television program, taped in front of a live audience in 2010 and originally released nationally from 2011-2014, features maestro maull and 60 Orchestra musicians exploring The famous opening movement of beethoven's "symphony no. 5." The concert format helps audience members and viewers notice more musical detail and enhance their enjoyment and understanding of The music. The program earned an emmy award nomination and received two telly awards. Our distribution partner american public television re-released this program beginning on january 1, 2024. There were 134 national broadcasts in 17 states from january 1 - june 30, 2024, reaching two top-10 markets (new york and los angeles). Traditional broadcasts of this show, as well as streaming via pbs passport, will continue through december 31, 2026. Streaming sales of this program were also ongoing via films media group, which provides educational video content to high schools, colleges and universities, and public libraries
