The Theater produces several major productions each year in three small performance spaces in its new performing arts venue in new york city. The Flea's 2023 world premiere was hang time. Written and directed by pulitzer prize-finalist zora howard, hang time is a theatrical installation that juxtaposes a poetic and joyful exploration of The interiority of black men with staging that tragically evokes modern-day lynchings. Through a producing partnership with tina knowles and richard lawson's where. Art. Can. Occur. Theater center (waco) in los angeles, hang time received its world premiere march 15 - april 3, 2023, to sold-out audiences and critical acclaim. Called, "undoubtedly moving...a masterwork of small intricacies" by The ny times, hang time is now in preparation for a national tour at The end of 2024.the 2023 session was The second year of The Flea's reimagined resident company program that provided artistic homes to emerge125 and The fled collective as The key resident company. Both have made use of their time, space, and support resources to develop new work alongside their growing administrative and funding infrastructures. In 2023, The Flea supported five new resident program projects, resulting in 78 performances. The Flea's juneteenth public performances program which commissioned four black performance artists to stage free public performances around The theme of juneteenth had its third year in 2023. Artists included niegel smith, shelley nicole, jack fuller, and trebien pollard.the Flea also debuted a new performance series as a means of developing and consolidating new theatrical audiences across performance disciplines and identities. Werk! The patio sessions was a high-octane festival of multidisciplinary artistic performances that launched september 21-october 1, 2023. Werk! Showcased new performances by black, brown, and queer artists, featuring glam award winning dj2face, comedy cabaret Theater duo The incredible drunkertons, afro-electro-disco-space-punks and musical Theater writers The illustrious blacks, all-women salsa band lulada club, and one of manhattan's fiercest drag divas, pixie aventura.
