Healthy schools + communities youth empowerment, family support systems, and community networking are critical To the Partnership's statewide substance use prevention initiatives. Gpp supported the launch of dmhas' fatherhood initiative, our engage, encourage, empower (e3) program added 9 new schools and monthly youth advisory board activities brought together young prevention leaders from across Connecticut. 136 students + 47 adult advisors attended our annual "future prevention leaders" conference, highlighting the strength of youth voices. The complex and evolving issues affecting young people inspired 30+ prevention trainings focused on trending and culturally informed topics.
Public awareness and public-private partnerships in 2023, the Partnership collaborated with 40+ public & private partners To increase the impact & visibility of gpp-led prevention initiatives. As part of a $1.2m federal grant, the "prevention starts with you!" Campaign was launched, emphasizing daily prevention efforts by distributing 50,000 deterra drug deactivation & disposal pouches To Connecticut residents. Events with governor lamont, u.s. Senators blumenthal & murphy, and other state & local officials highlighted the Partnership's innovative approach To prioritizing the health & safety of Connecticut residents. Gpp's central role in statewide youth engagement was recognized with a $350,000 grant for the ct mentoring fund. The Partnership leveraged its expanded communications, marketing & advertising channels To generate an estimated 3+ million total impressions.
Positive relationships with adults mentoring significantly impacts the choices a young person makes around substance use, their sense of self, purpose, and achievement. In 2023, our team led 56 mentoring trainings To support practitioners in our network of 80 local programs. 14 events addressed current topics & new models, including everyday mentoring, lgbtqia+, dei & racial equity, special youth groups, and the overlap of mentoring & prevention. Gpp staff provided training & technical assistance To 13 programs in Partnership with the national mentoring resources center / mentor, while also continuing To work with new haven public schools on the nia project. Young people will thrive when they can engage with adults with similar life experiences, making bipoc mentor recruitment a continued focus. Our work provided immeasurable guidance, inspiration, and coping skills for our next generation of leaders.
