Program areas at The Greater Seattle Bureau of Fearless Ideas
After school programs: our after-school programs focus on community-building and social-emotional skills as The foundation for meaningful writing, storytelling, and creative activities. We offer 2-6 session workshops on genres like mystery writing, comics, and animation. We serve students aged 6-18, with over 70% of greenwood and yesler terrace students speaking a home language other than english. At yesler terrace, we prioritize youth in Seattle housing authority subsidized housing. In 2022-2023, we saw increased attendance across locations, including a doubling in The virtual storytelling program. Yesler terrace launched a new college crash course for high school seniors, while greenwood improved engagement with a new program manager.
Retail store: we maintain a small retail store in partnership with another local nonprofit (under an llc, taxes filed separately), which serves as a community connection point and program recruitment space, which we pay into expenses for throughout The year. The store does not turn a profit.
Fearless Ideas in The classroom: in 2022-2023, Fearless Ideas collaborated with 8 Seattle public schools to provide writing and publishing projects to 473 students in 23 classrooms. We published 26 unique books, focusing on themes such as courage, self-advocacy, social and emotional learning, and imagination. Bfi also offered teacher professional development and hosted creative writing camps, with a focus on increasing service depth through longer-term projects. The programs aligned with state writing standards and emphasized culturally responsive literacy, giving students The confidence to share their work and impact their communities.
