Sustainable urbanization our sustainable urbanization work is is focused on The energy, transportation, and building systems that underpin The transition to a more sustainable economy. Through our programs, publications, and high-level advocacy, we work to support a transition to this more sustainable economic model in both china and The united states. Research and publicationswe produce thought leadership on policy, technology and market-based solutions that will advance china's industrial and energy-sector transformation. Our 2015 work included six papers: five with a focus on power sector reform and one about creating a sustainable economic transition in china's jing-jin-ji capital region. Mayor's training program on sustainable urbanizationthe mayors training program, organized in conjunction with cciee is now in its fourth year. In 2015, our delegation came from The province of zhejiang. The three-week-long program included time in beijing, chicago, portland, and san francisco for 2015. The delegation visited model projects; listened to experts on energy, transportation, water, and other sustainability issues. Cities of The future prizethe pi cities of The future prize, in its third year in 2015, is an opportunity for The Institute to highlight some of The best work being done within china to address pressing sustainability challenges. Projects that receive The grand prize or an honorable mention become well-known within china because of The media attention The prize receives, and they become primary case studies for our ongoing research and advocacy work. The 2015 prize was won by anheng group's sustainable city water supply network leakage control solution, which stood out for its use of cloud and big data technology to solve a common problem worldwide: urban water supply leakage.annual conference on sustainabilityco-organized with cciee, The 5th conference was held in beijing in october 2015. The conference is an opportunity to convene our strong community of senior officials, researchers and business people. The one-day program, kicked off by zeng peiyan and hank Paulson, leverages The research and projects of The past year, to engage experts in discussions that could shape tomorrow's policies and practices.risky business projectrisky business highlights The economic risks to The us caused by unmitigated climate change. Hank Paulson is a founding co-chair of The project and pi (through vice chair kate gordon, The founding executive director of The project) is a major driver of its work.the Institute's ceo council for sustainable urbanization is comprised of 17 ceos from leading u.s. and chinese global corporations. Council members are working together to advance sustainable urbanization through collaborative pilot projects, policy advocacy and research, in The areas of energy efficiency, green buildings and sustainable supply chains. The aim is for The council to be a model of cross-border cooperation between corporations from both countries working to share and gain insights on greening business practices and to demonstrate solutions to sustainability challenges.

We believe that truly sustainable economic growth is only possible if it simultaneously advances economic prosperity, a healthy environment, and low-carbon development solutions in The face of climate change. Through our projects, events, publications, and high-level advocacy, we work to support a transition to this more sustainable economic model in both china and The united states. The overarching goal of pi's conservation programs is to protect The critical ecosystems and biodiversity with global significance in china and other countries that are china's major overseas investment destinations or major commodity trade partners. The programs focuses on three thematic areas and they are: 1) support The chinese government to strengthen conservation of The coastal wetlands; 2) support The chinese government to establish a national park system; and 3) support The chinese government and business sectors to minimize The environmental impacts of china's overseas investment and import of commodities. Specific achievement for each of The three programs are as follows:1. National park program: we signed a collaborative agreement with ndrc of The chinese government and launched four projects in 2015 to develop policy recommendations for designing national level governance structure and technical guidelines for The pilot national parks in selected provinces. An international case study of The national park systems in 6 countries was conducted to learn The lessons and experience from these countries. An international workshop was organized in beijing and international experts from usnps and brazil and chinese experts made presentations to The chinese government officials from central and provincial levels to help them improve The leadership on development of national park system.2. Coastal wetland conservation program: we continued The three project which were launched in 2014, and two of The three were completed in 2015. The coastal wetland conservation blueprint project identified The conservation priorities, threats to The conservation targets and developed major policy recommendations for central and local governments to strengthen The conservation of these priority wetlands. The poynag lake project developed adoptive water level and fishery management strategies to improve The habitats of The migratory birds. The coastal wetlands conservation network and training project was launched in 2015 and 3 training programs were conducted in hk maipu for The officials and wetland managers.3. Environmental impact of china's going global: we launched The sustainable soy trade project between china and south america and have been engaging key players from china and brazil to develop strategies on decreasing deforestation and conversion of natural grasslands for soy plantation in brazil. We built a consortium of four international conservation organizations and chinese and multinational companies to support these companies to develop responsible sourcing of soy from brazil. We also conducted two workshops in china to increase The awareness and capacity of chinese companies on building a green supply chain and also organized one study tour of chinese delegation to visit brazil to enhance their understanding of The impacts of rapid and large scale expansion of soy plantation on The natural forests and grassland in brazil and to facilitate The direct communication between chinese soy importers and brazilian soy plantation farmers and exports.

Conservationthe Institute's conservation program addresses some of The most pressing environmental challenges facing china and The world. It focuses on three priority areas: wetlands, national parks, and responsible trade and investment. These work streams support The protection of china's natural coastline, shape The new architecture for china's protected areas, including national parks, and work to reduce The global environmental impact arising from china's overseas investment and international commodity trade. Activities range from site-based pilots and demonstrations, capacity building, to national-level policy advocacy and collaboration at a global level.

Through macropolo, china's economic arrival is decoded with incisive, market-relevant analysis and creative research products. The economic work spans critical areas, from finance to labor migration. Macropolo focuses on china's shifting macroeconomic policies and complex reforms, exploring changing priorities as The centrality of gdp growth wanes. Macropolo's analysis aims to unwrap The complexities of chinese politics in an accessible way, including a unique and evolving database on "must know" politicians and analysis on howthe chinese system really works. Macropolo's technology work provides balanced and nuanced insight into china's technological ambitions and The intensifying competition between The u.s. and china. Green financechina's transition to a more sustainable, low carbon economy will require major public and private investment in new technologies, policies and practices. The Paulson Institute supports these efforts, including in serving as an advisor to The g20 green finance study group, greening The belt and road, developing carbon marks in china, and assisting in The development of innovative financing vehicles for low-carb projects. To that end, The Paulson Institute launched a green finance center which promotes market-based solutions to support The development of a robust green finance market in china.
