The Jefferson Council sponsors and co-sponsors public speakers who address Jeffersonian principles of freedom of speech, expression, personal freedom and initiative. Their objective is to educate the public and students about these principles. They were instrumental in the adaptation of a freedom of speech and expression policy by the University of Virginia and are responsible for monitoring it. The organization is charitable, educational, and fully run by volunteers at no cost.

Estimated audience of 2000 students and public, live and via internet. Objectives: educate public and students about Thos Jefferson, his ideals and his legacy; and promote freedom of speech and expression, diversity of viewpoints.
Research and provision of data to UVA Board of Visitors re freedom of speech and expression, diversity of opinion, academic integrity and related expenses.
Communication with UVA students, friends and alumni re freedom of speech and expression issues, academic integrity and University policies and administration. Monitor same. Approximate subscribers, 3500.
