Program areas at The New Day Foundation for Families
New Day helps Michigan cancer patients and their Families by providing financial assistance and emotional support. The organization has improved health equity for cancer patients for 17 years with applications coming through more than 100 hospitals across The state. New Day serves more than 2300 cancer patients, caregivers, parents, and children every year before they hit critical financial and emotional breaking points. Financial toxicity is a harmful side effect that creates significant barriers to treatment and healing. New Day provides financial assistance paid directly to creditors on behalf of Families for housing, utilities, transportation, food, and other basic necessities because no family should have to make unthinkable choices between medical treatment and having basic needs met. Research shows that financial stress directly impacts treatment outcomes, with mortality rates doubling for those impacted by financial toxicity. The emotional support program consists of a trained staff and committed network of diverse, multilingual professional counselors who receive direct referrals from New Day. In 2023, New Day supported 2,328 people in Michigan with financial, emotional and grocery support.
