Program areas at The Prairie Club
As described in our mission statement, The Prairie Club promotes The enjoyment of nature and The great outdoors by maintaining two camps. Within one of The camps are four facilities that Club members can use for a fee to take advantage of hiking, biking, boating and other water sports at The camp. The second camp maintains several trailer sites and a lodge for members to use for a fee to take advantage of all The activities listed with The first camp as well as fishing. Maintenance of these two camps is our largest expense.
The Prairie Club has two active groups who walk on various saturdays and sundays. The group often walks in one of The two Prairie Club camps. But sometimes, they venture out into one of The Illinois forest preserves or other sites where nature is waiting to be discovered. They have become knowledgeable about The local flora and are always glad to share their stories and findings with other Club members.
The hazelhurst camp has 94 cottages in addition to The three rental facilities. Spring grove has 25 sites in addition to The lodge rental facility. Club activities include monday morning coffee, an ice-cream social, a talent show, square dancing and jr. clubhouse activities for children and teenagers.
The Prairie Club is devoted to responsible stewardship of The grounds at camp hazelhurst. In 2023 various volunteer hours were devoted to land management and eradication of invasive plant species. In addition, The Prairie Club contributed 1,000 each to chikaming open lands col and The nippersink watershed association. Col acquires available real estate to prevent further commercial development of lands in southwestern Michigan proximate to camp hazelhurst.
