Youth developmentthe ymca is a leader in nurturing The potential of every child and teen. Every day, The ymca helps Young people deepen positive values, their commitment to service, and their motivation to learn. We believe that all kids deserve The opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Our ymca programs, such as jump-start preschool, center street child care, upk, gymnastics, youth fitness, swim lessons and youth sports offer a range of experiences that enrich cognitive, social, physical and emotional growth. The ymca provides programming to youth and teen members, and public alike. All kids deserve The opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, under The guidance of people who care about them and believe in their potential. Keeping kids active and involved is part of our mission. In 2023, The y had 673 youths participate in sports programming, and 121 children utilize our jumpstart childcare at center street.
Social responsibilitythe Oneonta family ymca has been in our community since 1883. We are an organization that offers our community many ways to be involved and a chance to give, join, and volunteer. Strong communities don't just happen; they are The result of steady leadership and strong values provided by our y. Our ymca provides a variety of programs to develop personal educational/vocational/leadership skills, and we partner with other community organizations to identify and respond to community needs. A great example of The y responding to community needs is The collaboration with The city of Oneonta. The city came to us, as they could no longer offer programming as in The past, and asked The y to help formulate solutions. In 2023, The y continues to work with others to offer our professional services to The public. We were able to deliver a junior firefighter program, summer preschool, swim lessons and manage The city outdoor pool. A new collaboration was formed with bassett healthcare network to ensure community wellness. The y also partners with The city of Oneonta, The city school district and The southside mall. The Oneonta y is continually being looked at as defining The model for collaboration. The ymca offers programs, such as cpr/first aid, lifeguard training, water safety instructor training and swimming lessons. In 2023 we certified 43 lifeguards, 109 people in cpr, 83 people in first aid and taught 453 people swim lessons. These are just a few examples of how our ymca develops social responsibility that strengthens our community and builds The foundation for future generations to thrive. The y works to make our community safer. Staying with The theme of making communities safer we partnered with The Oneonta fire fighters with over 100 children attending our junior firefighter program and 100 children participated in The free safety around water program. The Oneonta family ymca also hosted several blood drives at The southside mall. In 2023 we again engaged volunteers where possible. We engaged 50 public volunteers and 10 policy volunteers. Volunteer board leadership & staff work together to ensure The y was here for The community. In 2023 individual donors and businesses of all types supported our cause. In normal times, community members and businesses support our programs and projects through other various types of opportunities and grants. With our doors open to all, The y brings together people from all ages and backgrounds and supports those who need us most. We take on The most urgent needs in The community and inspire a spirit of service.
Healthy livingthe y is a leading voice in our community on health and well-being. The ymca delivers health and well-being from The inside out. The ymca provides members with The supportive relationships and environments they need for their successful pursuit of health and well-being. This is of particular importance as our nation struggles with an obesity crisis, families struggle with work/life balance and individuals search for personal fulfillment. We bring families together, by offering sport, recreational and social networks that build relationships and strengthen bonds. Staying true to our mission of healthy living, in 2023 our ymca continued to reach outside our walls to ensure everyone had a chance to live healthy by now offering ymca360. This is an innovative virtual fitness option for The community. Participants can workout anytime at any place and on demand. Ymca360 is not only a fitness platform, it also offers music, cooking, nutrition, mental health programming, and so much more. We can now bring The y to The people. The Oneonta ymca is a major community provider of senior fitness opportunities, offering our active older adults specialized fitness classes. Additionally, and unlike a typical gym, The y builds a vital social network of support and caring. Senior based fitness has become so popular we entered into a collaboration with southside mall to accomadate The growing class sizes. In addition to classes, we host free senior socials to bring this valued population together for a day of exercise, healthy eating and socialization. Our programs are accessible, affordable and open to all faiths, backgrounds, abilities and income levels. The Oneonta family ymca works with many outside insurance providers to ensure seniors have access to opportunities to increase healthy living, such as silver sneakers, silver & fit, aarp, etc.in 2023, The y had 16,393 people attend fitness classes and 19,911 people participate in swimming activities.
