The Rural Behavioral Health Institute strives to lower suicide rates for rural youth through the creation of a school-based mental health system. This includes implementing universal screening and providing comprehensive mental health services. In FY2022, RBHI accomplished important goals, such as screening 3,700 students in 19 middle and high schools across 9 Montana counties for suicide risk and offering same-day mental health care to 120 high-risk students.

During the 2023-2024 school year, RBHI delivered its school-based suicide prevention program 16,788 times to students in Montana and Wisconsin schools. This service is offered free of charge to students and families.b. Suicide risk decreased 72% among students who participated in the program twice.c. Severe depression and anxiety symptoms were 32%+ lower among students who participated twice.d. RBHI delivered over 500 psychiatric care and individual therapy appointments to participating students.
