Description
The Shumla School preserves the oldest known "books" in North America - the ancient narrative murals of the lower Pecos canyonlands of Texas. They reveal lost chapters in North American history through documentation, research, stewardship and education. In 2022, Shumla continues the Hearthstone Project, which was launched in 2021 and funded in part by grants from the National Science Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities. Through this project, Shumla is building a chronology of the murals of the lower Pecos region.

In 2023, Shumla continued the Hearthstone Project, launched in 2021 and funded in part by grants from the National Science Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities. Through this project, Shumla is building a chronology of the murals of the lower Pecos and beginning to answer fundamental questions about their production and meaning. The project is anchored in the former Alexandria Project and utilizes archeological science, formal art analysis and indigenous knowledge. Shumla also continued its educational efforts (Shumla Scholars and internships), community outreach, landowner and agency stewardship, and presented and published its methods and findings.
