"The Stecher and Horowitz Foundation celebrated its 63rd year. The flagship program, now global, is The new york international piano competition, a biennial event. In preparation for this event, preliminary advertising; extensive mailings; plans with The manhattan school of music for accommodating The competition; The engaging of six prestigious jury members; and countless details are employed to justify The end results. A unique and particular feature of The competition is no elimination of contestants during The competition 's four rounds. In addition to The significant prizes awarded to The winners, The Foundation awards $1,000 to each of The remaining contestants.the centerpiece of The new york international piano competition and a program that carries over into The young artists series is The commissioning of new works. For young pianists, The privilege of working side by side with a distinguished living composer allows for a dialogue rarely afforded a classical musician. For composers, The commission generates exposure to new audiences in both urban centers as well as communities outside The traditional concert route. Previous commissioned american composers include: michael torke, john musto, avner dorman, michael brown, gabriella lena frank, lowell liebermann and gregory spears.within The tri-state area, new york's wqxr 105.9 fm featured young artists of The new york international piano competition on "The mcgraw-hill companies' young artists showcase. " Total listening audience: 1,000,000. The telecast of three documentaries about The new york international piano competition appeared on public broadcasting stations throughout The country, and more than 30,000,000 viewers had The opportunity to meet The Foundation's young artists. The documentaries explored The relationship between young classical pianists and their art; particularly how The personality and personal interpretation of each artist colors each work they perform. The recital series has presented concerts in Washington, d.c. at The phillips collection; temple emanu-el, new york city, The explorers club, new york city; grace church, white plains, new york; The lotos club, new york city; ossining public library, ossining, new york; national arts club, new york city; and fairfield university, fairfield, Connecticut. Audiences numbering more than 10,000 attended The performances.
