Program areas at The Watershed Project
Environmental education:the Watershed Project provides educational services to underserved richmond schools each year by teaching stem-based Watershed education to over 500 k-12 students in The classroom and through hands-on service learning during outdoor field trips to local and regional parks and to our own restoration Project sites. Twp restoration projects are located at marshes, creeks, shorelines, The richmond greenway, and in city streets and community centers all around richmond. We also work to provide community engagement, leadership development, and participatory design processes engaging over 1,000 local residents per year.
Greening urban watersheds:restoring natural function to The urban landscape by building green infrastructure with volunteers and community members of all ages. We help communities plan and implement strategies such as bioswales, rain gardens, and low-impact design projects that protect local watersheds from The pollution generated by modern life. These collaborative efforts help ensure The free flow of local creeks, reduce urban runoff, promote The spread of native plants, and improve The natural beauty and biodiversity of our urban watersheds.
Climate ready communities:the Watershed Project's climate ready communities is a forward-thinking program focused on helping our cities and neighborhoods withstand The growing impacts of climate change. The escalating effects of climate change on urban environments are intensifying, leading to increased heatwaves, sea-level rise, creek flooding, and strain on infrastructure, necessitating adaptive strategies for resilience and sustainability.
