Program areas at Thomas Alva Edison Foundation
Edison Foundation institute for electric innovation:the Edison Foundation institute for electric innovation (iei) focuses on advancing the adoption and application of new technologies that will strengthen and transform the power grid. Iei promotes the sharing of information, ideas, and experiences among regulators, policymakers, technology companies, thought leaders, and the electric power industry. Iei also identifies policies that support the business case for the adoption of cost-effective technologies. During cy2022, the following were significant accomplishments of the institute for electric innovation:continued on schedule oannual powering the people eventin october 2022, iei hosted its annual event focused on customer partnerships driving the future of energy. This year's event focused on two high priority areas for the electic power sector: 100% carbon free energy solutions: preferences, challenges, and pathways forward and using technologies to engage customers and drive business and climate outcomes. Electric companies, technology companies, policy makers, regulators and other stakeholders attended the event.iei executive dialoguesin 2022, iei brought together technology company executives and electric company ceos and senior executives for its thought leaders speak out executive dialogue series, which focused on using technology to successfully engage with residential customers.naruc breakfast briefingin july 2022, iei hosted a breakfast briefing in partnership with the world resources institute (wri) for national association of regulatory utility commissioner members focused on 100% carbon free energy solutions for corporate customers: moving from annual to hourly matching. Carbon free energy initiativein 2022, iei released issue brief titled "designing 100% carbon free energy solutions: preferences, challenges, and pathways forward." The issue brief incorporated the discussions and learnings from a series of workshops convened by iei and wri and explored the current state of corporate customer demand for time-matched 100% carbon free energy solutions, attributes that matter most to customers, and challenges with scaling these solutions. Iei reports and issue briefseach year, iei publishes reports, issue briefs, and fact sheets to identify where the industry is today and trends for the future in the areas of energy efficiency, smart meters, and clean energy trends. In 2022, iei produced an issue brief on electric company smart meter deployments and facts sheets focused on the state of clean energy implementation. In april 2022, iei authored, "u.s. electric companies are innovating to provide the solutions and options that customers want," an essay included in the u.s. doe/berkeley labs' future electric utility regulation series report "the role of innovation in the electric utility sector."
Edison Foundation institute for the energy transition:the Edison Foundation's institute for the energy transition (iet) focuses on assessing the key 24/7 zero-emitting and related technologies necessary to achieving carbon emissions reduction goals reliably and affordably and periodically updating these assessments for all stakeholders to reflect significant developments, including deployments and improved economic fundamentals. Iet also focuses on identifying solutions to the legal, regulatory, and policy issues that must be addressed to ensure that these technologies can be deployed as soon as they are demonstrated and economic. During cy2022, the following were significant accomplishments of the institute for the energy transition: continued on schedule o.iet executive clean technology dialoguesin 2022, iet partnered with mckinsey to organize a series of clean technology dialogues to be held in 2023 for technology company executives and electric company ceos and senior executives. The dialogues will focus on hydrogen, long duration energy storage, carbon capture and storage and advanced grid technologies, as well as an overall assessment of the clean energy technology landscape.global power sector assessmentin 2022, iet engaged icf to produce a public report analyzing power sector emissions globally, the key findings of which will be translated into infographics and one-pagers that will be made available on the iet website. Iet will publish the report, which contains country and sector specific data, including detailed information on the u.s. power sector in 2023.
