Program areas at Tieton Arts and Humanities
creARTe: After 10+ years, Tietons summer Art in the Park program has grown up! We have expanded it to offer high quality, co-curricular programming for K-12 kids in the Upper Yakima Valley all year long. The program is now called creARTe, a portmanteau of create+art, that works in both Spanish and in English. We are partnering with the Highland School District to create experiences that complement school lessons in both content and approach. Nearly all of our after school, summer, and weekend programming for creARTe happens at our new permanent home, The Tieton Fueling Station: 519 Maple Street; Tieton, WA 98947
10x10x10Tieton: A juried exhibition, Tieton Arts & Humanities invites artists to submit work that is not larger than 10 inches by 10 inches by 10 inches. Works can be of any media or process from photo, painting, printmaking, book arts, video, ceramic, glass, metal, wood, and more. In 2021, jurors invited 187 submissions of 875 received from around the globe, creating one of the most diverse shows in the Yakima Valley. Invited artsists receive a handmade catalog created by Paper Hammer showcasing the exhibitions artwork. In-person and online gallery sales support artists and the organization.
Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a vibrant community celebration honoring both los muertos and beauty of life. Day of the Dead celebrations began in Central America, and have roots in indigenous and Catholic traditions. Sweet sugar skulls, bright colors, and bitter-smelling cempazuchitl (calendula, or marigold) flowers evoke vibrant, ephemeral life and bitter, inevitible death-embracing both. Each year Tieton Arts & Humanities creates on huge community altar and we invite everyone to add to it. 1000+ visitors bring photos of loved ones, write messages, and bring mementos, candies, or foods. This provides a unique opportunity to remember the special people in our lives that are no longer with us.The day of celebration features arts and crafts activities, a sand painting by Seattle-based Oaxacan artist Fulgencio Lazo, sugar skull decorating and more! The gallery exhibition runs for five weeks afterward. Admission is always free and everyone is welcome.
