Program areas at Translators Without Borders-US
International programs - during the fiscal year Clear Global continued to contribute to the humanitarian responses in cox's bazar, bangladesh, and northeast nigeria through its ongoing language and training services to responding partner organizations. In nigeria, Clear Global focused on language and communication issues in complaint and feedback mechanisms and developed a series of low-text multilingual graphic communication materials to support more accessible and inclusive accountability by responding organizations. In bangladesh, Clear Global's program of research explored language and cultural barriers in access to information and the provision and quality of maternal and neonatal care and presented practical recommendations for service providers. The organization also supported the humanitarian response to the war in ukraine, with a rapid assessment, training for responders, and a psea glossary in relevant languages. In addition, we developed a intelligent search engine to support displaced ukrainians to get trusted information in their language. We also provided language support to respond in somalia and pakistan. Globally, Clear Global further contributed to the resources available for effective two-way communication in the languages of intended service users, particularly in humanitarian emergencies. One example was the expansion of the language maps and curated language data on its open-access language data initiative portal to inform humanitarian and development services, alongside downloadable multilingual language questions and answer options to make it easy for organizations to add them to standard assessments. Another was the co-development with the resource and support hub on the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse of a multilingual repository of resources. As a result, 80% of 400,000 unique users found the products Clear Global translated to be highly relevant. The arabic training module engaged over 1,300 users, primarily from smaller community organizations. 2022 saw more sign languages being added to Clear Global glossaries and an expansion in our work to support plain language. Clear Global's humanitarian programs are designed to reduce language barriers that can impede vital response and relief efforts, by facilitating more effective two-way communication between affected populations and responders. The learning generated by research and interventions on the ground was used to raise awareness across the humanitarian sector globally of language as an under regarded factor in the reach, impact, and accountability of humanitarian action.
Program technology - leveraging the power of machine learning and artificial intelligence, Clear Global has crafted language technology solutions tailored to support marginalized languages, enabling 2-way communication for vulnerable people. Our expertise includes the creation of machine translation models and automated speech recognition (asr) systems. Through natural language understanding, we implement these solutions for specific use cases, employing a human-centered design approach to ensure that what we do is appropriate and effective. We collaborate with local technology partners to extend our reach to communities worldwide, facilitating access to these vital communication tools. Clear Global developed 11 cutting-edge language technology solutions including: 'shehu': supporting access to information during the covid-19 pandemic. We reintroduced shehu, a chatbot designed to disseminate accurate and reliable covid-19 vaccination information in english, hausa and kanuri through facebook messenger and whatsapp using natural language understanding. Shehu engaged in over 86,000 conversations with more than 6,000 individuals, earning a remarkable trust rating of 93.3%. This is a relatively unconnected part of nigeria, so we were pleasantly surprised by the number of users and the 90% satisfaction rate. 'yasno': a search engine for refugees from ukraine. Yasno means Clear in ukrainian. We designed, developed, and deployed an intelligent search engine tailored to meet the urgent information needs of ukrainian refugees. During the ukraine crisis, particularly the first year, the problem was not the lack of information but too much information. Yasno significantly reduced the time spent accessing vital information and has a relevancy score of over 70%.
Language services - Clear Global language service programs provide language support for aid programs worldwide, facilitating effective communication between humanitarian workers and the populations they serve. Clear Global focuses on the most vulnerable by translating life-saving information and building local language translation capacity for underserved languages or where no translation capacity exists. The development and preparedness language service program relies on Clear Global's custom translation platform to deliver the majority of its work. The platform is a managed, crowd-sourced system connecting the Clear Global community of approximately 60,000 volunteer Translators and language professionals directly with non-profit partners. In 2022, Clear Global delivered nearly 25 million words in 140 language pairs for approximately 150 non-governmental organizations partners, amplifying the reach and impact of their work. Clear Global also advises aid organizations on the most effective approach to multilingual communication in specific contexts and develops custom workflows and technologies. Beyond written translation, Clear Global also provides a range of other language services including plain language editing, audio translation, localization, and multimedia support (transcription, subtitling, voiceovers.
