Program areas at Truman National Security Project
Leadership development programs: the organization trains rising policy experts each year as Truman fellows. The organization trains rising leaders who are activists, elected officials, and communications consultants through our partners program. The organization trains military veterans and frontline civilians as part of our defense council program. With all three groups, the organization teaches them about defense, development, diplomacy and democracy policy through a series of curated "101" training programs (e.g., military 101, development 101, climate & energy 101). We also offer all three groups a leadership development seminar, including a structured mentorship program during their associate (first) year as Truman members. We also offer advanced educational opportunities to strengthen and hone members cache and standing as leading experts in their fields, as well as practical skills building in communication and messaging, among other skills, to assist in their professional development and strengthen their capacity to lead change.
National Security education (training): tnsp offers a certified training program for its more advanced leaders, who in turn, offer trainings for other organizations on issues of National Security interest, such as miliary 101 training for civilian leaders to understand the military, city and state diplomacy 101 training for leaders to understand the relationship between foreign policy, National Security and state and local engagement. The organization engages in writing and media appearances in National and state publications, radio, and television on a variety of National Security and foreign policy topics.
Advocacy: tnsp engages in advocacy activities such as public education, town hall meetings, speaking events, media and paid advertising to affect policies seen as essential to our country's National Security. These advocacy activities are nonpartisan, and take place across the united states. Advocacy issues are chosen for their salience to america's Security in the 21st century - from the importance of american leadership globally, to reducing our reliance on oil, rationalizing our budget, and other policy choices that affect whether america can remain a strong country whose policies are based in our founding values. Advocacy campaigns may involve working with a number of other organizations who share our policy views and may be engaged in Project title - such as operation free - denotes activities across a group of organizations.
