Program areas at Unconditional Freedom
Prison monastery - started in 2020, at the height of the covid-19 epidemic, the program aims to restore the penitentiary to its roots; a place to contemplate and meaningfully contribute to society while incarcerated, in the process tranforming shame into contribution. Unconditional Freedom introduced a workbook, the art of soulmaking (aos), which was a guided journey through yoga, mediation, and self-inquiry practices. The workbook started inroads for the prison monastery program, providing the tools and support for individuals to approach their prison setting as a monastery. Incarcerated individuals were paired with a penpal outside the walls, a certified volunteer who also went through the workbooks and shared experiences back and forth. This program, which started with handwritten letters, is now live at over 500 facilities across 44 states, reaching over 40,000 incarcerated individuals, with over 7,000 letters exchanged.
Women over dinner is aimed at enlivening women's inestimable power to reshape our world. It is our intent to reach 100 million women. One dinner at a time, we share a meal and connect through answering a series of curated prompts about our impact, our power, and our sexuality.
Free food - started in 2019 under the name love to table, the program transformed organic excess from local farms into farm-to-table meals for unhoused and in need populations. The program brings dignity to outcast populations and delivers love through food. We started in the san francisco tenderloin, and currently have a thriving program in harlem, ny, serving 400+ sit down three-course meals a week, as well as a fresh food pantry which circulates over 2,000 lbs of rescued fruits and vegetables per week in the community.
