Program areas at United Seniors of Oakland and Alameda County

For the last 18 years USOAC has offered Travel Training to seniors on the Bay Areas public transit systems, so that they could learn skills to ride and gain the confidence to use public transportation. Our Travel Training program also advocates for accessible, affordable, and available public transit for older adults. In 2021 our Travel Trainer attended about 15 continued education webinars and other virtual meetings and/or forums. There were only 3 travel trainees during the year due to Covid-19. We conducted 3 actions and our Travel Trainer advocated and/or represented seniors at 11 meetings. There was also work done to promote safe routes to and from transit through our Pedestrian Safety. Finally, there were 823 Travel Training contacts for Covid-19.
The 18th Annual Healthy Living Festival/HLF was held on September 30th at the Oakland Zoo for the first time ever as a drive thru event due to the continued concern with the public health emergency from coronavirus pandemic. The stats from the HLF were as follows: 1500 meals and swag bags provided, 80 flu shots administered, 35 blood pressure screened, 16 eye exams, 80 Covid-19 vaccinations, more than 8000 outreach contacts, 50 exhibitors, 1113 online registrations, and 20 sponsors. It was lived streamed on You Tube as well.
Covid-19 Relief & Recovery was a major part of our 2021 program to provide wellness checks, resources, information, assessments, and action.- During the year there were wellness check-ins at 14 virtual meetings of the Board of Directors, which is our Leadership Organizing Team. Our 2 summer interns also contacted our membership of more than 13,000 to check on them. Additionally, our Walk Club committee was provided information at its regular meetings; there was food and swag bags with information given to 185 attendees at the July 23rd grab & go celebration. - There were 3 virtual actions, Covid-19 Listening Sessions, on January 15th, May 7th, and December 10th with Dr. Nicholas Moss, Alameda County Health Officer, and Dr. Noha Aboelata, CEO and Founder of Community Roots Health Center. These actions approximately 100 duplicated attendees, who received Covid-19 related information especially for seniors along with Q&A. - On June 4th at the virtual USOAC 30th Annual Convention public officials were held accountable to support and implement senior Covid-19 response, recovery, and resilience with more than 100 attendees.- USOAC contributed over $4500 to 3 senior groups, Korean Seniors, Golden Age, and St. Marys Center, to help with their Covid-19 relief.- Outreach stats for Covid-19, including a 11,200 Public Health mailer on surges, variants, safety protocols, etc, were distributed to 823 Travel Training contacts, 478 Medication Management one to ones and contacts, as well as 50 Anniversary Luncheon attendees.- USOAC collaborated with the We Connect effort from St. Marys Center to address the digital divide by training 25 seniors to use and access online technology as well as providing them smart devices.
