Program areas at United Way of Alamance County
Community fund the community fund is granted to local nonprofits that have the greatest impact and proven work increasing access to basic needs that alleviate poverty. Community volunteers review the grants and recommend agencies for funding annually. Eighteen programs/projects were funded in 2023.
211, supported locally by United Way, is a resource and referral system available by phone and online that is available 24/7/365. Over 4,520 calls were made from Alamance County to 211 (year-to-date) and 184,554 calls statewide. Top caller needs are consistently housing/shelter related). Local resource coaching and healthcare marketplace navigation is also offered internally by a uw staff-person virtually or in-person.
Community partnerships and programs community council, consists of monthly meetings and the community council blog, with over 400 subscribers that disseminates pertinent information for nonprofits. Community council keeps the nonprofit sector and beyond informed of current issues affecting the community and provides opportunities to form new partnerships (meetings are open to the public). Tax time consists of irs trained volunteers that assist low income, disabled or veterans in filing their tax returns. Appointments are drop-off and volunteers complete preparation at the United Way office. Last season, 520 individuals were served. Housing Alamance is the strategic housing work that United Way is leading in the community. With a housing strategy manager on staff, the goal is to assist in the coordination of already existing programs that are addressing housing to create an efficient flow of resources, referrals and data collection/sharing. There is an emphasis on education and advocacy opportunities for quality affordable housing.
