Program areas at Upstream Public Health
In 2022, we were awarded funds from the measure 108 tobacco tax. Our projects main aims, as touched on briefly through out knight cancer work, included building capacity for a multi-cultural coalition with an aim to end the sale of menthol cigarettes in the state of Oregon. We partnered with the national experts in menthol tobacco policy, the center for black Health and equity.
We began work in 2022 seeking insight from community members about their interest in changing the sugary drinks policy landscape through coalition building. We held community listening sessions and one-on-one interviews in english and spanish language, speaking with 50 lane county residents in total.in the latter half of 2022, we began working on a contract with ccph in 2022 exploring how to introduce healthy retail pilots at a convenience store in milwaukie, or. By the end of the year, we had planned that we would likely survey convenience store customers about their interest in fresh produce offerings at corner stores. During this latter half of 2022, we, along with clackamas Public Health staff, joined monthly meetings with others around the state who wished to explore similar healthy retail pilot options
We began two grants funded by the knight cancer institute community partnership program in early 2022: starting an equity-centered and trauma-informed commercial tobacco prevention coalition and exploring healthy retail pilots/healthy default drinks pilots.both programs started out the year with additional funding from other sources.we successfully launched a multi-cultural community-based commercial tobacco prevention coalition in the fall of 2022 with an aim to end the sale of menthol cigarettes and flavored nicotine products.we gained funding for our healthy retail pilots that lead us to pause our knight cancer work and received a no-cost extension to continue working on that throughout 2023.
