Upwell Turtles

Program activites in 2023: Completed a three-year study co-morbidities in cold-stunned sea turtles on the West Coast, including veterinary review of medical data on 53 cold-stunned turtles (39 olive ridleys, 10 greens and 4 loggerheads) stranding between 2019 and 2022, of which 25% survived. The study provided evidence of cold-stunning year-round, peaking in late fall to winter. Upwell's wildlife veterinarian created a novel mentation scoring system to categorize alertness and responsiveness during intake of cold-stunned turtles and held a necropsy workshop to provide continuing education to West Coast stranding network participants.
