Program areas at Verona Street Animal Society
Purchase of medicine, medical equipment, disease test kits, microchip identification, etc. To aid in the treatment and adoption of animals in care of rochester Animal services. This included clinical services for over 1,800 animals.
Outreach and support. This program is focused on addressing barriers in access to pet resources. the friends/ras team provides pet food, supplies, vaccinations, microchips, identification tags, and other supplies plus veterinary care and spay/neuter to support pets staying with their families. During 2021, we supported over 4,000 pets in approximately 2,800 households. In addition, during 2021, vsas subsidized approximately 235 spay/neuter surgeries through their no cost voucher program. Approximately 520 adoptions were made through the seniors to seniors program.
Enrichment and play yard expense support. Provided enrichment support for over 2,100 animals, including the intake for approximately 1,150 dogs.
Volunteer coordination support - the Friends' staff provide volunteer recruitment, retention and training support for all programs at rochester Animal services including play yard, dog walking, foster care and other Shelter support. During 2021, the Friends' recruited approximately 121 volunteers and managed on average 90 volunteers working more than 1,000 hours on a monthly basis on behalf of rochester Animal services.
Rochester Animal services established its foster care program to extend the walls of the Shelter during periods of high intake and to better serve special needs animals. This program has become the focus for housing the majority of animals in their care. the Friends have subsidized the majority of costs associated with this program including medical and other support costs. Food for foster animals is donated to the Shelter. Over 330 dogs and 270 cats were part of foster care in 2021.
