Program areas at Veterans Assistance Dogs of Texas

The organization trained and placed 10 Dogs w/ disabled Veterans throughout the state of Texas, giving us a total of 66 Dogs placed during our 10 years of service. In particular, we placed 1 service dog with a disabled veteran residing in the city of amarillo which fulfilled our obligation of a $26,000 grant received from the brumley foundation; another service dog was placed in bexar county with a disabled veteran residing in san antonio fulfilling our obligation for a grant of $20,000 received from the greehey family foundation; a third service dog was placed in fort bend county with a disabled veteran residing in sugarland fulfilling our obligation for a grant of $24,000 we received from the henderson-wessendorf foundation. 1 dog washed out of the program but was used as a comfort dog for a disabled veteran. No Dogs were returned to a shelter. 9 Dogs remained in the training program as of 6/30/2024. Lauren cheney was hired as our digital social media administrator and will help with marketing and management of our website. Service dog suzie was the first dog we placed in december 2013 with veteran john bencken. Suzie was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer and passed in april 2024. Veteran john bencken was given a service dog immediately after the diagnosis so that suzie could live out the rest of her life in retirement. We had another dog we placed in 2016, named onyx, pass away. We continue to partner with hill country dog center located in bandera county. We have a list of 44 qualified disabled Veterans in need of a service dog.
