Program areas at Veterans of Foreign Wars
The VFW Department of Arizona maintains a robust network of both employees and volunteers whose main objective is helping veterans navigate the intricacies of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This includes applying for benefits, enrolling in health care and solving various problems that can and do arise when dealing with the VA. Our paid Service Officers obtained a combined total of $69 million dollars in direct compensation during fiscal year 21-22 for Arizona disabled veterans. This is in keeping with the VFW's slogan of Veterans Helping Veterans. The outright expenditures related to this important function approaches $210,000, not counting the untold hours by our volunteer members.
The VFW Department of Arizona sponsors numerous youth activities, including Voice of Democracy oral essay scholarships for high school students, Patriot's Pen written essay scholarships for middle school students and yearly awards to exceptional teachers, first responders and police officers. We are also a primary sponsor the the Arizona 4H Sport Shooting Team, and an annual resident summer camp for children of active duty service members.
The VFW Department of Arizona with the help of its state-wide affiliates has donated over $30,000 supporting National VFW Programs such as the National Home for Children, the VFW Veterans and Military Support, which includes Operation Uplink, Unmet Needs and Military Assistance Program.
