The Virginia Nutrient Credit Exchange Association is a voluntary association of 73 owners of 105 treatment facilities cleaning wastewater in the Chesapeake Bay watershed to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus. The Nutrient Exchange was established in 2005 to coordinate and facilitate nutrient credit trading among its members to help improve water quality efficiently and cost-effectively. Today, the Nutrient Exchange is considered the largest and most successful water quality trading program in the United States.

Program areas at Virginia Nutrient Credit Exchange Association

The Association coordinates and facilitates its member participation in Virginia's chesapeake bay watershed Nutrient Credit Exchange program, enacted into Virginia law in 2005. The purpose of the program is to enable Virginia to meet chesapeake bay waste load allocations cost-effectively and as soon as possible, while accomodating continued growth and development under Nutrient cap allocations. During the year, the Association completed the annual update of compliance plan required by Virginia state water control board. Also, the Association received and made payments for Nutrient credits that were purchased and sold during the year.
