Program areas at Virtua
One of the primary ways in which Virtua fulfills its exempt purpose is through its affiliated entities provision of healthcare to those with financial need. Virtua administers financial assistance under the provisions of the state of new jersey's charity care program, which limits assistance to individuals with incomes up to 300% of the federal poverty guidelines. Virtua has supplemented the state's program with the creation of its own charity assistance program, which extends assistance to individuals with incomes up to 500% of federal poverty guidelines. This has resulted in assistance being available to more of those in need throughout the community, with over 40.01% of total 2022 assistance being provided under the provisions of Virtua's program.virtua through its affiliated entities provides care to many individuals that receive assistance with the costs of their healthcare under a medical assistance program. The largest such program is medicaid, which is jointly funded by the federal and state of new jersey governments and is administered by the state. The program's reimbursement does not adequately cover the cost of the care provided. By absorbing the cost of care that is not reimbursed, Virtua is relieving the government of this burden. Services are provided on both an inpatient and outpatient basis, including in the emergency departments and in clinics.virtua through its affiliated entities provides a wide range of outpatient services at its family Health center and other programs in its camden facility, including comprehensive primary care and specialty services for infants, children, teens and adults. Additionally, Virtua subsidizes women's clinics for gynecological and obstetrical care, as well as behavioral Health and emergency services and by Virtua's mobile intensive care unit program. The costs associated with maintaining these services are in excess of reimbursements to Virtua.
