California is the premier Travel destination in the united states, attracting 259.1 million visitors in 2022. In 2022, the state's Travel industry generated $134.4 billion in revenue for state businesses, $11.9 billion in local and state taxes and employed 1.1 million californians. Visit California began operation in 1998 as a coalition of Travel industry interests with the objective of developing marketing programs that keep California top-of-mind as a premier Travel destination.
To help California's economic recovery from the devastating effects of the covid-19, the state of California approved as part of its fiscal year 2022-23 state budget to give the organization a $15 million, one-time stimulus to boost California's Tourism economy. The funds directly supported the organization's domestic marketing efforts to help California communities begin to welcome back visitors from both in and out of state.
