Program areas at Vizavance
Public health education: informing the general public about basic facts of vision care, health and safety, and motivating them to appropriate action, conducted through mass media such as television, radio, newspapers, magazines, and films, and through the distribution of Vizavance publications, social media channels, and through responses to phone and written inquiries from the public.
Community service: sponsoring and promoting screening programs for the early detection of signs of eye trouble amoung preschool children, school aged children, and adults, particularly amblyopia (lazy eye) in children, and glaucoma and amd (age-related macular degeneration) in adults. Vizavance provides referrals to children and adults who do not pass the screenings and need medical follow-up. Vouchers for free exams and glasses are provided for families who qualify.
Professional education and training: serving as an authoritative source of information of the latest development in vision and eye care so that the eye care professionals, nurses, teachers and others in blindness prevention can better service their clients. Providing state approved training for nurses and school staff in chart and photo screening.
