Program areas at Vermont Mathematics Initiative
The VMI, in partnership with Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU): (1) had 34 students enrolled in the Master's Degree program, split between 2 cohorts. One cohort of 20 participants completed their third year and will complete the final three credits of the program in July 2023. A cohort of 14 educators completed their second year of the program. Interruptions caused by the Coronavirus pandemic continued, affecting our enrollment. No new cohort started during this reporting period. (2) enrolled 14 participants into the second cohort of the VMI Post-masters (post-graduate) certificate program. The inaugural cohort that started in 2021, completed the program during this reporting period. Of the 21 participants who started the certificate program, 18 completed the 15-credit, five-course sequence supporting mathematics leaders and those aspiring to mathematics education leadership positions.
The VMI provided professional consulting services in support of mathematics teaching and learning at the middle level in EWSD (specifically the ADL and EMS schools). This service included: >Classroom based support for teachers, >intervention work (planning, materials development, system and processes development), >PLC attendance and planning, >attending and contributing to meetings with PLC leaders and administration, >collaboration with PLC leaders. >general support as needed of middle level programs at both schools. Additionally the VMI led a team in conducting a mathematics audit for the EWSD district.
The VMI conducted several professional development opportunities across the state during this reporting period. These were non-degree granting courses, workshops or inservice experiences for educators that are not part of the Masters Degree or Post-graduate certificate programs. (1) Mathematical Coherence in the Elementary Grades offered in two locations; (2) Mathematics as a Second Language also offered in two locations; (3) Discrete Mathematics for Educators; (4) An inservice workshop focused on effective mathematics instruction; and, (5) A monthly workshop session for mathematics committee leaders in a school district in Southern VT. This focused on mathematics leadership and supporting teachers as leaders in mathematics.
