Program areas at Washed Ashore
Washed Ashore is the focal cultural project of the Artula Institute for Arts and Environmental Education, a non-profit organization. Washed Ashores mission is to create and display aesthetically pleasing art to educate global audience about plastic pollution in our oceans waterways and to inspire positive change in consumer habits.. Art Creation and Community Engagement: Washed Ashores artistic process is intricate and hands-on. Marine debris is collected from the Oregon Coast. Collected plastics are processed, cleaned, and repurposed at Washed Ashore & #39;s facility, then crafted into large-scale sculptures by a team of lead artists, volunteers, and community members of all ages. These free workshops foster community involvement, creating accessible conservation learning spaces. Since its inception, Washed Ashore has transformed over 35 tons of ocean debris into sculptures, showcased in nearly 100 national art pieces. Community Reach and Impact: In 2023, Washed Ashore reached new audiences through significant installations at prominent venues, including the Chautauqua Institute, the South Coast Botanical Garden, NSU University, and several other renowned institutions. Washed Ashore expanded its reach inland, connecting new audiences to the ocean plastics crisis through local watersheds. By the end of 2023, Washed Ashores installations and educational programs have reached over 40 million viewers globally, including high-visibility installations like those previously displayed at the U.S. State Department, United Nations, and international environmental conferences. New Projects and Milestones: In 2023, Washed Ashore launched impactful installations, such as the Chautauqua Institute's Osprey Sculpture and the expansive Galveston Island Art Installation, making its programs more accessible through free public exhibits. The organization also initiated strategic partnerships, such as with Primal Investments, supporting our operational needs. Additionally, Washed Ashore secured six grants totaling $91,117, allowing for growth in programming and outreach. Educational Expansion: In line with expanding conservation awareness, Washed Ashore launched the creation of an educational ocean activity book and developed partnerships with schools, libraries, and local organizations to enhance learning opportunities about ocean conservation. Washed Ashore's educational materials and volunteer opportunities have successfully promoted conservation through artistic expression, storytelling, and direct community involvement. Organizational Growth and Future Outlook: In 2023, Washed Ashore adapted to a post-pandemic growth trajectory, strengthening operations at its new Bandon Fisherman's Warehouse facility, optimizing logistics, and recruiting additional artists and support staff. The organization's strategic goals include further operational efficiency, grant-supported projects, commissioned sculptures, and expanded community-based education. As Washed Ashore looks toward 2024, the organization remains focused on building partnerships, expanding its global reach, and continuing to create impactful art that inspires action against plastic pollution worldwide.
