Description
Water Underground believes that every human being deserves access to life's most basic necessity - clean water. Our mission is to use access to clean water, sanitation, hygiene, and agricultural innovation as the building blocks to enable communities in the most vulnerable rural areas of Mozambique to lift themselves out of poverty and launch themselves into development. We equip communities with the education and quality infrastructure they need to become empowered and take ownership of the community's future.

Program areas at Water Underground

In 2021, four new community water projects were completed by Water Underground along with existing water systems being upgraded to solar and re-drilling of boreholes in communities that did not have sufficient water levels. A Grant from Divine Water (totaling $10,000), along with generous donations from Foundations and individuals funded these projects. Projects were centered in the schools of the following villages in Massinga District, Inhambane Province, Mozambique: Chiondillo, Chivinzane, Seemuane, and Paindane. Each comprehensive WASH project provides a water well, a school sanitation center with hand wash stations and a menstrual hygiene room, and a large community garden with drip irrigation. Two and a half months of community training, including students, covered all aspects of the program. Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) is part of the training and program which led to progress in achieving Open Defecation Free status in all communities. Over 4,800 people were directly impacted by the NEW Water Underground projects in 2021. We improved the existing water systems with an upgrade to Solar Powered Systems in the communities of Murrenze and Mavume. Included in the upgrade are the installation of water lines to the agricultural gardens, the latrines, the teacher living quarters, and drinking fountains for the children. Unfortunately, the pandemic hindered our ability to fundraise and complete additional projects that are desperately needed.
Community Engagement includes all costs of reaching all of our communities.
